What is the cause of impotence?
An erection is the result of several processes: a man get's sexually stimulated which leads to increased flow of blood into the corpora cavernosa - the main arteries of the penis - and this leads to his penis becoming erect. There are certain chemicals and hormones involved in increasing the blood flow to the penis. If due to any reason, the functioning of these chemicals and hormones is disrupted, erection might not come about. This indicates that you might be suffering from impotence. In other words, partial or total impairment of the erectile function is called impotence.
Types of impotence
Impotence can be classified broadly into two types - primary impotence: in this type of impotence a man is never able to have an erection adequate for sexual intercourse; and secondary impotence: in which a man sometimes fails to achieve an erection and/or maintain an erection long enough to complete intercourse to the satisfaction of both partners.
Almost all men suffer for the latter form of impotence at some point in their lives, making it more common of the two.

Impotence can have some devastating effects on the psyche of men as most of them associate sexual performance with self-esteem. It can take away his feeling of being a man. Impotence can cause men to become uncertain and frustrated and they might begin evading intimate situations with their partners. This kind of behaviour increases the pressure and anxiety associated with impotence.

The psychological effects of impotence can be highly infuriating and can affect every aspect of a man's life, his relationship with his partner, his interactions on a social level, and even his job performance.
